Hiroyuki Asai

PhD student, University of Tokyo

I am a PhD student in macroeconomics at the University of Tokyo, specializing in production networks. My research explores how the structure of production networks influences aggregate economic outcomes and how these networks evolve over time. By combining theoretical modeling with empirical analysis, I aim to deepen our understanding of firm dynamics, network formation, and macroeconomic performance.

I work extensively with firm-level transaction data and interindustry input-output tables to study the intricate relationships within production networks. Currently, I am focusing on Tokyo Shoko Research’s corporate transaction dataset to analyze how production networks change throughout a firm’s life cycle. Additionally, I am developing a general equilibrium model that incorporates endogenous network formation among heterogeneous firms.

My research also extends to large-scale production networks in Japan, particularly examining how economic shocks—such as those induced by the COVID-19 pandemic—propagate across supply chains. Through my work, I seek to contribute valuable insights into the role of network structures in shaping economic resilience and long-term growth.
