Backwaters is the annual management festival of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK). Backwaters 2015 was a roaring success as students of B-School from various parts of the country participated in the programme. 6600 students coming from more than 300 institutes across India including the top 20 B-schools participated. The star attractions include White Knight(National Level Business Plan Competition), Model United Nation (The agenda of the conference was Deliberations between Developed and Developing Nations to Reach a Settlement on Limiting Global Temperature Rise), Siksha (Training programme for High School and College Students to prepare them for various competitive examinations and case study competitions),On The Mark (Case from Mercadeo CMSA was studied to have an opportunity to innovate and come up with solutions), Konflict Management(conducted to draft a plan of action to resolve the internal conflicts among the employees in Morgan Stanley) etc.
Backwaters in association with Industry Interaction Cell (IIC) organized TEDxIIMKozhikode. TEDx is an independently organised TED event where in accomplished individuals from various walks of life deliver talks to inspire, motivate and empower the community. The theme for this year's event was "Uncharted Territories". The eminent speakers were Mr.V.S.Sudhakar (Co-founder of Big Basket and MORE retail, Mr.Arunabh Das Sharma (President of Times Group), Ms.Malvika Iyer (Bomb blast survivor and motivational speaker), Ms.Archana Sardana (Skydiver, Base jumper) and Mr.Prasanth Nair (District Collector, Kozhikode).
The Backwaters Committee along with the Cultural Committee also organizes Roobaroo, the inter-section cultural competition for the new batch at Kampus. It also hosts simulation events with corporates (ICICI StockMind), annual quizzing events (En-Route Bizzathlon) and debating competitions (Annual Great Debate) along with publishing an annual management magazine, MindScape.
The Cultural Committee of IIM Kozhikode is an integral part of every student's life at Kampus. Culcom, as it is popularly called, works throughout the year to ensure that the time spent at Kampus is memorable. The committee's premier event is the Annual Cultural Festival, Echoes conducted in the month of January. ‘Echoes' includes a wide variety of events like Music, Dance, Theatre, Quizzes and Literary Events spread over a period of three days. Echoes acts as a platform for the students at IIMK to get to showcase their hidden talents promoting development of their softer skills, it helps students appreciate various arts forms and culture through exposure to varied performance and alos promotes the culture of IIMK where management training is complemented with the overall development of individuals.
Echoes 2016 was organised during 29th-31st January, 2016. Students from B-Schools across the country participated in the event. The event saw a total audience footfall of almost 5000 students over the three days of the fest. Three pronites with well-known artists like Aditi Singh Sharma, Nikhil D’Souza, and Pt. Shubhendra Rao was the major attraction in the year’s festival.
The Entrepreneurship cell (E-Cell) of IIM Kozhikode provides a platform for students interested in entrepreneurial careers to put to test ideas, theories, and concepts they learn in the classroom. The committee provides valuable leadership experience and networking contacts through conferences, guest lectures, social events, company visits, and more. The E-cell's overall goal is to position IIM Kozhikode as a hub for talent that can drive innovation and initiative in the ever-changing industry and provide technical, networking and training resources to the students' body. The E-cell not only promotes creation of economic value but also encourages contributing positively to social value too. It aims to inspire the IIM community to use its resources, talent and business acumen as job-makers by assisting students who wish to start their own ventures through providing them the necessary support. The E-cell organizes workshops, alumni interactions, meetings with Venture capitalist firms and other such similar assistance which an entrepreneur may need. As a result, from the first batch of IIM-K in 1996 till date, each batch saw a number of students tread the path less taken and go on to become successful in businesses of their own. The E Cell's flagship annual fest , the National E Summit brings together entrepreneurs, industry stalwarts and mentors together on one platform with the objective of promoting entrepreneurial spirit not only among students but also in the society as a whole.
The Industry Interaction Cell (IIC) acts as the link that connects IIM Kozhikode to the corporate world. IIC provides the platform wherein students, academia, industry magnates and leaders from all walks of life come together and share ideas. Through its various initiatives round the year, IIC ensures that the budding managers stay in touch with the real world, while honing their skills in the classrooms. Entrusted with all non-placement industry-related activities at IIM Kozhikode, IIC is committed to forging a long-term symbiotic relationship between the institution and the industry. IIC provides plenty of opportunities to the student community at IIMK to test their business acumen through Live Projects offered in various domains. It allows them to have a first-hand experience of the business issues faced by organisations. IIC organises Horizons, the three day flagship annual management conclave of IIMK. IIC also organises year round workshops and guest lectures from the industry practitioners along with the Leadership Talk series, a year round series of lectures from industry leaders. Through this initiative IIMK has witnessed the presence of speakers like Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Late Prof C.K. Prahlad, Dr. D. Subba Rao, Dr. J.J. Irani, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Harsh Mariwala among others.

- Start-O-Sphere with the aim to create a platform for providing networking, hiring and funding opportunities for the stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem with an emphasis on IIMK startups and startup enthusiasts. Mr.Gagan Arora (Ex-CEO Printvenue), Ms.Kanika Tekriwal (Founder Jet Set Go), Mr.Murugavel Janakiraman (CEO Bharat Matrimony Group) and Mr.Pranav Kumar Suresh (CEO Startup Village) were the key speakers.

IT Committee acts as a liaison between the students and the Computer Centre. Commonly known as ITCOMM on campus, it manages the network, IIMK Live portal, student servers etc. With an unavoidable need for internet on campus, the committee works throughout the year providing the best IT support to the students and is the first point of contact for any internet related or connectivity issues. The committee also provides download support to the students meeting the requirements of software, educational documentaries, journals, e-books etc. The committee also maintains the IIMK Live accounts of the students, the heart to every activity on campus.
Konquest, which liaisons with different business schools for national and international level competitions and collegiate events, is the knowledge committee of IIMK. It also assists the Students Placements Committee in the Summer Internships and Final Placements process by conducting GD-PI workshops and inviting, throughout the year, professional experts to conduct sessions to coach and assist the students participating in these processes. The committee also collects information from student’s vis-à-vis the internship and placements process so that subsequent batches may gain insights into the recruiting practices of different companies which visit IIMK.
The committee also provides service to the student committee for International Exchange. IIMK has partnerships with over 20 universities/institutes across the world including European Business School, ESCP Europe, CBS, HHL, Bocconi among others.
The Merchandising and Design Committee (MADCOM) of IIMK comprises of designers and merchandisers and it is the authorised entity on campus that sells ‘IIM Kozhikode' branded merchandise which include Tshirts, souvenirs, sweatshirts and other IIMK branded articles. The merchandise is designed in house and MADCOM is also the official merchandise partner at major events at IIM Kozhikode, which include Backwaters, Echoes, Horizons, E-Summit, Sangam, Nostalgia, Sangram, Expressions among others. In addition to being the sole providers of ‘IIM Kozhikode' branded merchandise, MADCOM helps all the students in their journey at the Institute with education loans, laptops, suits and computer accessories. It also has a signature store that aims to provide in-store facilities leading to an enhanced shopping experience and the concept of MADCOM.
Every year around last week of February IIM Kozhikode organises the Calicut Marathon where more than 6000 people run together to spread the spirit of being the change they want to see in society. With a strong social footing, the marathon has grown from strength to strength over the years. It is the biggest marathon in Calicut and has inspired thousands of people, young and old to contribute to a cause. The marathon over the year had themes such as “Be the Change”, “Empowering her future” which threw light on burning issues of the day.
This year Marathon was organised by the Marathon Committee on 28th February 2016, with a social objective (theme) in line with Compassionate Kozhikode. A 10 KM competitive race and a 3 KM non-competitive race of Dream Run were part of the marathon.
In order to meet the twin objectives of inculcating a sense of social responsibility in its students and to make a difference to the society in the form of initiatives that culminate in social development, the Social Service Group was formed in IIMK, comprising a group of students who believe in being the change they want to see. They carry out social development initiatives on behalf of the student community at IIMK and help students connect with the local society in unique ways. The various events under the SSG banner range from Expressions, an event exclusively for the cleaning and working staff, a personality development workshop in association with CREST, a social case study competition Srijan, in association with Kerala Social Security Mission and career counseling for students from public schools and government colleges. Apart from this, SSG also organises a general health check up programme for the IIMK fraternity called 'Arogya' and classes in spoken english for mess workers by the students. The Social Service Group believes in the adage Charity begins at home, involving the student fraternity in giving back to the society, inculcating a sense of social responsibility.
The sports committee in IIMK is a student body that is concerned with all sports and games activities in the campus. The committee engages itself in activities round the year that starts from Clash of Titans that is exclusive for the first years and spanning all sporting disciplines. It also acts as an interface for intra college tournaments with Sangram (3 pronged B school tournament) being the most prominent one, which it hosts every alternate year and also manage other popular intra college events like the Football league, Inter Hostel Cricket and Cricket League.
The latest initiative has been Shatranj, the sports conclave that drew participation from various under graduate and post graduate colleges as well as noted for the presence of esteemed sports dignitaries.
Public Relations Cell (PR Cell) acts as an interface between internal and external stakeholders of IIMK community. It has the responsibility of communicating the activities and accomplishment of IIMK community to the outside world and promoting the brand of IIMK. Some of the responsibilities are Event Coverage, Publications and other miscellaneous activities such as conduct competitions, quizzes, workships etc.
Infrastructure Committee (IC) coordinates with various stakeholders to maintain and improve the infrastructure and facilities for the student community at IIM Kozhikode. The main responsibility is taking care of Mess and other food joints on the campus, Information Technology (such as maintenance of committee websites, IIMK Live Domain, coordination with Compute Centre etc), Hostel Infrastructure and Academic Infrastructure
The strength of any institute is comprises the present students, who are the future leaders and the alumni of the college, who bring in accolades by virtue of their success and standing in the society.The Alumni Committee of IIMK, popularly called the Alcom, acts as the bridge between the past and the future. It networks with the alumni and brings them closer to the students by organizing workshops and lectures and facilitating one-on-one interactions with those who have 'been there and done that', all the while believing that such interactions help in narrowing the gap between the academia and the corporate world. The two major events organised by Alcom are Sangam and Nostalgia. Sangam is the annual Alumni-Student-Fresher Meet which is held across various cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, Cochin and even in United States of America, United Kingdom, Dubai and Singapore. It gives an opportunity for the present, the past and the incoming batch to interact with each other and learn from shared experiences.
Nostalgia is the flagship event of the Alumni Committee. It is the annual Alumni Meet - an evocative event that marks homecoming, celebration and unparalleled joy of communion with the alma mater. Tentatively scheduled in mid-January, it is an ideal opportunity to renew old bonds, foster new ties and relive the magical moments all over again. The Alumnus series is a new initiative launched, which provides an exciting platform for regular interaction between the current PGP students & the alumni of IIMK, facilitated by Guest Lectures, Webcasts, Workshops, etc.
