Research Areas
Prof. Balooni undertakes interdisciplinary research on environment, resources, development policy and sustainability in the developing countries context, especially those in South and Southeast Asia. Within this broad area, he has been focusing on decentralization and local governance, conservation, common property, community-based management, and REDD+.

Current Projects
Prof. Balooni is currently working on two papers in the decentralized governance context of the Kerala state in India. One paper focuses of “Self-reliance vs. state responsibility in sustaining lift irrigation systems”, which highlights that despite irrigation management transfer and special campaigns for decentralization in the Kerala state to develop local-initiatives and self-help, water users and local self-governments lack enough responsibility for sustaining the systems. Another paper focuses on “Eroding community norms and sustainability of irrigation tanks in a predominantly agrarian tribal community”. This paper highlights that the Kerala state’s development interventions increasingly being sought after by the tribal community have the unintended impact on undermining community norms and thereby, these interventions adversely impact the conducive conditions for sustainability of irrigation tanks.
