Program Structure

Areas of specialisation

The FPM of IIMK will be offered through the following Areas of Specializations :

Curriculum

FPM at IIMK has two phases: course work and thesis research. The first phase covers the first two years which includes course work (Core Courses and Elective/ Doctoral level Courses), a course of independent study at the end of the first academic year followed by a second academic year of in-depth courses in area of specialization. The method of instruction at the Institute is a blend of the lecture method and experiential learning methods such as case discussions, role plays, simulations, group discussions and projects.

Successful completion of the first phase requires passing the Area Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE) to proceed to the second phase of programme. In the second phase participants undertake thesis research work with a Research Advisory Committee (RAC) which comprises two faculty members from the area of specialisation and one faculty member from a different area.

The first year courses introduce to theoretical foundations in the diverse disciplines and inter-disciplinary areas of management. They also provide exposure to basic research tools relevant to the different areas of specialization and inculcate research interest by introducing participants to the research process. Because of these different goals, the students in first year study some of the courses with Post Graduate Programme (PGP) students. They also have other courses which are exclusively designed for them. The year is divided into three trimesters (terms) and the courses in each trimester are enlisted below.

Area Comprehensive Qualifying Examination (CQE)

Subject to having met the passing requirements for the second year, a student is eligible to appear for CQE. The general structure includes a written examination that assesses the student’s conceptual and methodological capability, and ability to perform independent research in his/her area of interest. An oral component (presentation/panel) may also be included in the examination to check for participant skill to present ideas cogently to an audience displaying communication and presentation skills.

Formation of the RAC is the priority during the third year. The RAC monitors the progress of the participant thereafter and ensures that there is no significant deviation from the important programme guidelines and milestones. Once the RAC is formed, the participant begins work on preparing the dissertation research proposal under the guidance of the RAC. The participant should present an Open Proposal Seminar on the research problem. The participant is also expected to work towards presenting a paper at an international conference.

Participants need to continue their work on thesis. By the fourth year, significant progress (completion of data collection and analysis) towards the completion of dissertation should have been made. Participants submit a term-wise plan, approved by the RAC, to the FPM Office at the beginning of the year. The RAC closely monitors progress as per plan. The participant should have definitely presented a paper in a national/ international conference by the fourth year.

The participant is expected to have the first draft of final defensible thesis submitted to the RAC. The participant presents this version as a Pre-Thesis Submission Seminar. The feedback from the RAC can be incorporated by the student to prepare the final, examiner-ready draft of the dissertation. The thesis is sent to an Indian external examiner and an international external examiner for examination. The participant delivers a public seminar in Final Thesis Defense Seminar and a closed-door viva-voce happens. After the successful completion of this final presentation-cum-Viva Voce, the Thesis Examination Committee will finally give its formal recommendation for the award of the Fellow title to the participant. This will complete all the formalities for the award of the title and the Fellow participant will be awarded the title in the next Convocation.
